Success is your choice…

My mother in law came to stay with us this weekend. You may remember me mentioning that my family, are fans of “X factor,” well my mother in law is a “Strictly Come Dancing” fan. Fortunately the programmes do not clash so we did not have to make a choice on which one to watch.

 I remember my business coach explaining to me that success is a choice.  If you had to make that choice what would it be, and how would it affect your business? 

My business coach went on to explain that some business owners choose to be successful and do all that it takes to be successful, whilst others make different choices and don’t enjoy the same success. 

When the economy was in melt down 18 months ago some businesses went bust, some survived and others grew despite the climate. When this was investigated closer it transpired that those business owners whose goal was to survive the downturn, did just that, they just survived or worse still went bust.  However other business owners in the same sector doing exactly the same thing chose to grow their business and it did. 

The main difference between the two groups is the choices they made. One group were driven by that four letter word FEAR or False Evidence Appearing Real whilst the other more successful business owners, were driven by hope and optimism. It makes you realise how sometimes our choices are based on fear. 

Here is a great question that takes fear out of the equation. 

“What would you business look like if you knew you could not fail?” 

Who would you call?

How many potential clients would you call?

How many potential clients would you email/write to about your products and services?

How many people would you employ?

Where would your business be based?

What would you do that you are not doing now?

What would you do differently if you choose to grow your business into the largest and best in your sector? 

What is clear by asking the above questions of you and your business, is that your underlying choices dictate your behaviour. So what choices would you go for X factor or Strictly Come Dancing?

Do you have the X Factor?

It’s an outrage!

The family and I have been watching the X Factor and I’m hooked!
I think it’s an outrage that Wagner went through and Storm Lee went out! Wagner can’t sing, so why did he go through?
It’s very simple, the audience like him! He’s fun, he’s confident and he makes people smile.

There is an important lesson there for business owners. How many of your clients would describe you like that?

Have you ever wondered what your team and clients’ perception of your confidence is and what impact it’s having on your business? Do you make your clients smile and do they look forward to hearing from you?

As a business owner the challenges you face are all too real. Maybe your team is underperforming and you are starting to question your ability as a business leader, perhaps your number one client is not returning your calls, or clients are taking even longer to settle your invoices.

For some business owners these external factors can affect your confidence. So, what’s the best way to get the negative messages and thoughts out of your head and boost your flagging confidence levels?  One of the most famous quotes from Henry Ford is ‘whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right’, so you need to find ways to believe that you can succeed.

There are a number of tools and techniques that can be used to boost confidence and which in turn leads to increased sales. There are three golden rules to get you going.

1. The first is to focus on what you want. It’s no good saying “I just want more confidence,” you have to be specific about what you need it for. For instance saying “I want the confidence to lead and manage my team” immediately provides a purpose.

2. The second rule is you must take action, however small. It is only by doing something different, that you will see and experience progress and this in turn, will boost your confidence.   Just thinking about it isn’t enough.

3. You need to keep working at it. You wouldn’t expect to be an expert driver with just one lesson; you have to keep practicing in order for it to come naturally. It’s the same with your confidence.

You can be right or you can be rich, but you cannot be both

During the labour party’s leadership contest, all the pundits predicted David would be the leader of the labour party. They all got it wrong and then proceeded to be right, by explaining why David didn’t win, to defend their corner in order to look good in front of their peers.

I remember my coach telling me that as humans we will spend all our lives trying to be “right and looking good.” She then asked me “How would your world be if I didn’t feel the need to be right and to look good. Put another way, you can defend your existing beliefs if you wish, but it’s not going to get you a different result.

You can justify why you are overweight or you can start to change your diet and exercise.

You can rationalize why your relationship is no longer passionate, or you can surprise your partner with a romantic meal for two.

You can excuse why your business isn’t working or you can solve the problems and earn more money.

It’s very easy to ‘play safe’ and have excuses that protect you from ‘losing’, the problem is you’ll blend into the crowd, never to be seen again and never achieve any of your dreams.
If you want your life to be extraordinary, an example to others, you MUST do things differently to everyone else.

So next time you hear someone in the press or on TV whinging and moaning about the economy or how nobody’s got any money, ask yourself ‘Do I want to be right (by fitting in with the general consensus of how the world is) or do I want to be a successful business owner and rich, with the lifestyle you’ve always dreamed of?’

If you want to succeed you must ignore what 97% of the general business population are doing and learn from the 2% who are succeeding regardless of what is happening in the market.
The days where you would just put a website up and get on the phone and call around is just not effective anymore.

Don’t let your leadership fail your business

Often we get calls from business leaders asking us questions about “leadership.” Below is what I consider a great response to the question of leadership. It was written by one of the best personal development gurus in the world, Jim Rohn on the subject of: The Qualities for Better Leadership.
If you want to be a leader who attracts quality people, the key is to become a person of quality yourself. Leadership is the ability to attract someone to the gifts, skills and opportunities you offer as an owner, as a manager, as a parent. I call leadership the great challenge of life.

What’s important in leadership is refining your skills. All great leaders keep working on themselves until they become effective. Here are some specifics:

1. Learn to be strong, but not rude. It is an extra step you must take to become a powerful, capable leader with a wide range of reach. Some people mistake rudeness for strength. It’s not even a good substitute.

2. Learn to be kind, but not weak. We must not mistake kindness for weakness. Kindness isn’t weak. Kindness is a certain type of strength. We must be kind enough to tell somebody the truth. We must be kind enough and considerate enough to lay it on the line. We must be kind enough to tell it like it is and not deal in delusion.

3. Learn to be bold, but not a bully. It takes boldness to win the day. To build your influence, you’ve got to walk in front of your group. You’ve got to be willing to take the first arrow, tackle the first problem and discover the first sign of trouble.

4. You’ve got to learn to be humble, but not timid. You can’t get to the high life by being timid. Some people mistake timidity for humility. Humility is almost a God-like word. A sense of awe. A sense of wonder. An awareness of the human soul and spirit. An understanding that there is something unique about the human drama versus the rest of life. Humility is a grasp of the distance between us and the stars, yet having the feeling that we’re part of the stars. So humility is a virtue, but timidity is a disease. Timidity is an affliction. It can be cured, but it is a problem.

5. Be proud, but not arrogant. It takes pride to win the day. It takes pride to build your ambition. It takes pride in community. It takes pride in cause, in accomplishment. But the key to becoming a good leader is being proud without being arrogant. In fact, I believe the worst kind of arrogance is arrogance from ignorance. It’s when you don’t know that you don’t know. Now that kind of arrogance is intolerable. If someone is smart and arrogant, we can tolerate that. But if someone is ignorant and arrogant, that’s just too much to take.

6. Develop humour without folly. That’s important for a leader. In leadership, we learn that it’s OK to be witty, but not silly. It’s OK to be fun, but not foolish.

7. Lastly, deal in realities. Deal in truth. Save yourself the agony. Just accept life like it is. Life is unique. Some people call it tragic, but I’d like to think it’s unique. The whole drama of life is unique. It’s fascinating. And I’ve found that the skills that work well for one leader may not work at all for another. But the fundamental skills of leadership can be adapted to work well for just about everyone: at work, in the community and at home.

On Friday I had a great coaching session with my coach where he reminded me that there are only 63 working days left until the end of the year. It has been quite an interesting year, one way and another and with 75% of the year gone we have 25% of the year left to achieve all that we set out to achieve.

One of my action steps after my session with my coach was to measure where I am against my 12 month goal, so I thought I would share some thoughts with you.  No matter what time of the year it is, there will always be business that needs to be secured. Some business owners may say something like “Let’s leave this until next month, after the holidays or until the New Year,” my response is always the same “Are you joking.” 

Smart business owners know that you can acquire business 365 days of the year. As a former recruitment consultant I once got authorisation for a retainer on Christmas Eve!  The point is if a client will commit to using you on Christmas Eve, then why not any other time of the year. It is also worth asking, what’s the implication if you believe that now is not a good time to get business, but your competitors think otherwise. 

My point is this: Games are won and lost in the last quarter. I’m going to take you through the same process my coach took me through to make the last 63 days count. So go on grab a pen and paper, and answer the following last quarter questions… 

  1. What are your biggest achievements so far this year? (list 10-12)
  2. Brainstorm the results that didn’t get achieved (the results, not the individual actions)
  3. Describe your current position: number of clients, monthly income, hours worked and fulfilment.
  4. How do you want your business to be different in 12 months time?
  5. How do you want your business to be different in 62 days?
  6. What projects do I need to start to make sure I’m on track in 30 days time?
  7. What do I need to START doing? STOP doing? KEEP doing?
  8. What do I need to learn? 

Great! Now make yourself a quick action plan. Remember ACTION gets results.

Can I share with you a recent email that I received from a disgruntled recruitment business owner?

 “I don’t know what’s wrong; I was one of the top performing recruiters in my last firm. Now that I’ve set up on my own I don’t seem to be able to make the kind of money I did before.”

This is without doubt, the myth that kills more people’s recruiting business dreams than any other… The myth being because you know how to do the job, you now know how to run a business.
   
Do you know someone who is a fantastic recruiter who really wants a recruiting business, but just can’t find clients?
 
Now ask yourself this….
 
Do you know someone who is not a particularly great recruiter who has lots of clients?
 
In my seminars, 95% of the audience typically answer both questions with a resounding YES!   So quite clearly then, it is not how good you are as a recruiter that determines the clients you get.  How good you are determines how many clients you KEEP, but you need to get them first!

If you follow this one piece of advice, your recruiting business will prosper where the vast majority fail. You’ll never have a problem finding clients ever again.  You’ll have a joyous, fulfilling business beyond your wildest dreams and create a business rather than have a job. 
   
The secret to having a super successful recruiting business is…
 
Run it as a business!
 
Put a little more bluntly, most recruitment business owners have been taught how to be a recruiter, but have never been taught how to run a business. It doesn’t stop them setting up in business. They then wonder why it doesn’t quite go to plan.  To be successful as a recruiter you must do what most recruitment business owners refuse to do and master
the skill of sales and marketing.
 
If you know how to market yourself, you can find as many clients as you want, as quickly as you want. You can charge the going rate without having to discount to ridiculous levels. You won’t have to waste time with clients who say “email your terms and I will get back to you.” By the way they never will.

 You get frustrated when the one placement you have been relying on that month falls through, because the candidate has accepted the “counter offer.” 

You can choose the clients who value and respect you as a recruiter. And you can live the life you’ve always dreamed…

 Once you have mastered how to generate warm leads and have clients wanting to buy more than you want to sell. Then you have a recruitment business. Last Monday I had two quotes from double glazing companies as my windows needed replacing. I am curious what would your response be if I told you that I was going to do the job myself.  I suspect you would question my sanity and wonder why I didn’t just get an expert in to do the job.  Let me ask you a question “why don’t you get some help with your sales and marketing.”

 I had a really hard and challenging day at work and was sitting in Euston station waiting for my train when the dreaded announcement was made…

“Ladies and gentlemen the train that was due to leave for Northampton has been cancelled the next train will leave in one hour” Together you could hear the collective groan as passengers almost in unison checked their watches and looked towards the sky and tutted..

I quickly grabbed my case and headed for the bar upstairs. A bottle of beer and a read of the Evening paper seemed really appealing!

I arrived in the bar to be confronted by a group of six well dressed business people, who judging by their behaviour and volume of the conversation had been there for some time. That was all I needed a group of “high spirited hooray henrys” I quickly found myself a seat and started to read the Evening paper. This proved to more difficult than anticipated as these “hooray henrys” were getting louder by the minute.

One of the group was wearing a well made navy blue pin stripped suit and expensive shoes, he was telling everyone within a 5 mile radius that was willing to listen, that he was the best recruiter the firm had ever employed. Another one of the group, a lady called Fiona looked at him disdainfully and said “Giles you are just a lucky git”

Giles looked at her in utter amazement, he looked like he about to burst, the veins on his forehead were bulging and looked like he was about to explode. Giles replied “How dare you suggest that my fantastic performance is down to luck I work my butt off” One of the other members of the group stepped in almost as a peace keeper and said. “Giles you are a top performing recruiter of that there is no doubt, I guess what Fiona means is that you seem to work on fewer assignments and yet deliver on so much more.”

“Ah that’s because most recruiters are mugs and just don’t ask the four magic questions, consequently you lot work harder for less results.” The other members looked at him incredulously and Giles just stood there with a bottle of red in one hand and a half full glass in the other looking extremely smug.

At this point the whole bar went silent and waited for the four magic questions, that would mean less work and earning more money.

I was lucky enough a few weeks ago to listen to a presentation by Bob Geldolf who gave a highly charged and emotive  presentation on how he 25 years ago, committed to raising millions of pounds to save thousands of lives in Africa.

 After seeing BBC news reports of the African famine, Bob Geldof and Midge Ure wrote the song…Do They Know It’s Christmas, to raise money for the crisis. Mr Geldof then went on a crusade to attract other stars to the cause.  Performing under the name Band Aid, they released the song on 7 December 1984. It was the fastest selling single ever and raised £8m. Live Aid eventually raised £40m. Half of the money was spent on food and half on long-term development. Do you think that was good luck?

I was also lucky enough to spend a few days in Barcelona with my family for the European athletic championship, where again I witnessed men and women who had committed to achieving their lifelong goals.  In the stories of some of the competitors were fine examples of how hard work and commitment can bring success. Athletes who had been written off came back to triumph, not for the cash or kudos but because medals mattered to them. Farah was perhaps the best example of commitment. Five years ago he took the decision to commit everything to his running, living a sparse monastic lifestyle, moving house, moving away from his family for long periods. Neither was the pay-off instant, but he stuck at it. His distance double was a fitting reward.

The reaction of other podium finishers was also quite revealing. Four years ago GB bronze medals were celebrated wildly. Here, even silver medals were barely considered good enough. Rhys Williams refused to do a lap of honour after winning his behind Greene in the 400m hurdles, while Michael Rimmer looked like he had been handed a prison sentence rather than a prize in his 800m medal ceremony.

One question I always ask my clients before we embark on a coaching programme. “Are you totally committed to your goal?” Interestingly the response is not always affirmative. Yet if I ask these same clients if they are committed to the wellbeing of their children the response is always positive.

I am yet to meet a successful business leader who put their success down to luck or lack of commitment.

A story that has been told time and time again, but always worth reading….

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.

 The family ate together at the table, but the elderly grandfather’s shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.

The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess. “We must do something about Grandfather,” said the son. “I’ve had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.”

 So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone whilst the rest of the family enjoyed dinner together.

 Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather’s direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone.

 Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.

 One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, “What are you making?”

 The boy responded, “Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food when I grow up.”

 The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks, and even though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.

 That evening the husband took Grandfather’s hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

 So, what are the takeaways from this story for us?

Regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life.

 Making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.”

 Life sometimes gives you a second chance.

 If you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But, if you focus on your family and your friends, happiness will find you.

People will forget what you said … people will forget what you did…but people will never forget how you made them feel.

 I got an email this past week from a reasonably successful recruitment business owner.

She is generating about £400k pa, she asked me a question that really got me thinking about the

Number one Most Common Trait of Broke or Nearly-Broke Recruitment business owners.

Could this email have been written by you…?

Hi Terry

I was wondering if you could give me a call please, you see….

“I’m already successful as a recruitment business owner by most standards but I’m still operating at my personal ‘break even’ every month and therefore not gaining much by way of wealth creation for myself.  My problem is not that I don’t know how to do what I need to do, it’s that I just don’t drive myself to do it. I think this is a tricky problem and I want to know if you’ve successfully helped someone else through this. If you have, can I speak briefly to them?”

The answers to his last two questions are “yes” and “yes!”

Look, I’ve coached over 200 professional recruitment business owners over the last 7 years, so I’ve been able to observe some trends.

First, let’s identify the challenge…

You’ve got a poverty mind-set.

Yes. That’s it, plain and simple.

I remember hearing a teaching by a guy named Harold Eberle.

In his travels around the world, he’s observed that folks caught in a grinding battle against poverty all share a common trait. He observed that they would always do just enough work and make just enough money to survive for TODAY. They’d never work harder or longer to earn MORE than they need for today.
